Dorchester Befriending Scheme

The Dorchester Befriending Scheme are a group of volunteers who offer their services to help patients who are registered with a surgery in the Dorchester area. They are co-ordinated by NHS Dorset. Volunteers are particularly needed for isolated, elderly people who may be lonely or just need a helping hand staying independent.

Services that are offered include:

Befriending

• Help with shopping and errands
• Transport to appointments
• Accompanied walks
• Dog walking
• Reading assistance
• Social interaction

Volunteers can offer as much or as little time as they wish – however they should be available to help on a regular basis as patients quickly come to depend on their friend and can be disappointed if they fail to arrive when expected. When a volunteer offers their services, the volunteer co-ordinator will arrange to meet them to discuss their application and the type of help they can offer.
