Family Planning

The doctors and nurses can provide you with or advise you on many different forms of contraception. In the first instance, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss this. Alternately you can visit the Family Planning clinic in Weymouth, details and the telephone number for the clinic can be found on our useful telephone numbers page.

General contraceptive information and advice can be found on the Family Planning Association website.

Emergency Contraception

If you think you require post-coital contraception (the “morning-after pill”), it is best taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex (although it is still effective up to 72 hours after). Please speak to a receptionist and explain that you need to be seen urgently.

Alternatively, the morning-after pill can be purchased from pharmacies.

Maternity

All pregnant women can refer themselves to the midwife between weeks 8 and 10 of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Self Referral Online – https://maternitymattersdorset.nhs.uk  Or by phone 01305 253315 (if no access to the internet)

Whilst you will be referring yourself to the midwives your GP does require a few details in order to keep your GP Medical Records up-to-date. Please ask reception for a pregnancy notification form and they will supply you with a pregnancy pack which contains all the information you require for your pregnancy.

All our doctors provide maternity care to their pregnant patients with the help of the midwifery team who visit the surgery weekly. Please make your booking appointment with the midwife (see above) or see your doctor if you are having problems.

Pre-conception advice is also available on request.

Child Health

We have a health visitor attached to the surgery who oversees the healthy development of our under-fives. The 6 week baby check is carried out by your doctor whilst subsequent developmental checks are done by the health visitor.

Appointments for “Baby-Clinic” (for routine weighing, measuring) can be made at reception.

Appointments for full developmental checks should be made directly with the health visitors on 01305 217056.

Child Immunisations

Child immunisations are carried out by our practice nurses in accordance with the national immunisation schedule. Information about childhood immunisations can be found here.

You will normally receive an invitation through the post. If in doubt your health visitor or doctor can advise.

In-House Practitioner Services

A number of practitioners of differing disciplines visit the surgery to treat our patients. We are very fortunate in being able to provide our patients with on-site:

  • Counsellors/Psychologists
  • Dieticians
  • Midwives

All practitioners require referral by the doctors.
